So i have been looked into it and found this and many other things that say the same

Companions gain levels with experience, similar to the main character. They must be summoned and active to gain experience as you quest and play the game. Upon leveling, companions can be trained through the companion tab "Begin Training" option.

Companions have a maximum rank depending upon their rarity.

White (Common): Rank 15
Green (Uncommon): Rank 20
Blue (Rare): Rank 25
Purple (Very Rare): Rank 30

At this time Rank 30 is the maximum rank for a companion. Common companions will be able to equip slot 3 runes, however equipment slots will still be locked due to rank limitation. Note: Although it has not been released as of the most recent update, there is a planned item that allows more common companions to rank up higher. The items are listed under Companion Merchant, however the cost is listed as "Coming Soon!".

Training Tome I - Raises companion's quality to uncommon.
Training Tome II - Raises companion's quality to epic.
Training Tome III - Raises companion's quality to rare.

So in other words we get a Common companion for free which will level up to lvl 15 but if you want them to level higher or have more companions you have to pay for it

Excellent - thank-you cheers tar for that! As expected then (like mounts), you have to pay for the decent stuff or spend your life playing to get them.

Pretty much yes but then so far we have paid nothing so can't really complain

Well those Nightmare Lockboxes can contain a purple companion or mount (it's random though, so who knows what the actual chances of getting either are). Although you need a hefty amount of AD to get a key.

The Nightmare Lockboxes contain:
Approximately 10 Tarmalune Trade Bars

And one of the following:
Armored Nightmare - Mount
Phoera - Companion
Terror Flame - Weapon Enchantment
Brilliant Insignia - Enchantment
Indomitable Runestone
Gloomwrought Weapons Crate
Jeweled Idol
Coffers of Enchantments
Coffers of Runestones
Leadership Profession Pack

I have 9 or 10 of these purple boxes but no keys and can't afford to buy any either
