This is released soon and is looking to be an outstanding game. It is semi-multiplayer. Just thought I'd let you know if you hadn't already heard the hype around it.

It does look superb. I didn't realise is had a multiplayer element to it (based on what you have said, I cant see the links).

Forgot that you don't have the admin. Excerpt:
Here's a list of multiplayer systems that have been advertised by the developers as being a part of the game:

1) You can choose to upload your discoveries to the Atlas (which is a fancy in-game name for Hello Game's servers) and share information about them with other players, as well as receive discovery information (through the Atlas) that other players have opted to share.

2) You can deposit short messages on planets for other players to find. Think of that as "messages in a bottle".

3) You can see the location of your friends on the galactic map.

4) You can come across other players during your travels. This always comes with the caveat that the universe is huge and your odds of accidentally running into anyone is incredibly rare.

5) Player characters don't have name tags over their heads, so it'll be easier to spot them when they're running around outside of their ship (versus when they're flying their ship around).

6) Coming across another player character is the only way for you to see (in-game) what your avatar looks like.

7) Other players can attack and kill you. Keep that in mind if you ever spot another Explorer.

8) There is a limit to the number of players that can synchronize client data within an unknown volume of space. That means if there's 50 people hopping around in one spot, you're not going to see all 50 of them. While the exact number of clients that can sync has never been given, the way Sean has described it makes "a handful" a safe bet. Also, your friends are not given any priority over other players when it comes to this display limit.

9) All players start in the same galaxy, each as spread out as possible on the outer edge of that galaxy.

Everything beyond that is speculation, unfortunately. I think there are some safer assumptions you can make, however. If you can see one another you can maybe (?) walk around together while exploring the planet. If you can attack each other, and you can attack NPCs, then you can maybe (?) attack NPCs while you happen to be together. Etc. We just don't know yet.

As far as post launch, the developers have repeatedly claimed they are interested in continuing to evolve the game. On the topic of multiplayer specifically, Sean once said:

Originally posted by Sean Murray:
"There is this thing, which I'm not going to talk about now; that is a plan for multiplayer, and for people to have a more traditional multiplayer experience within the game. That's something that we'll deal with further down the line, that is exciting. But that is not what's core to the game right now. We have a laser-sharp focus on what we're going to ship with, basically."

..and he has mentioned that he'd be willing to look into community interests (including multiplayer) on a few occasions.

Yes, less than 2 hours in-game at present and awfully close to my refund window. I don't know how much of the game you saw on Friday, but I wasn't exactly met with the awe and wonder I had hoped for. Let's sum up some of my initial findings:

- Tutorial is laughable. The first hour was spent getting materials together to fix my ship (as indicated by the "mission"). It failed to actually tell me that your suit does not last forever without constant energy fill-ups to keep you alive. I was 10 minutes away from my ship and then got a 5% remaining warning regarding my imminent death. No telling me what I needed to do or how I needed to do it, just "you are gonna die", followed by frantic menu searching etc.

- Combat is dreadful

- Mining and resource gathering takes front-bench to actual exploration, which I can foresee becoming very tedious as time goes on.

- The initial FOV of 80 was like wearing horse blinders on the sides of my face. It was dreadful. I wacked it up to 100, but it still feels really horrible because of this and will not go any higher.

- Locked at 30FPS by default. Wow. Just wow. Saying that, after upping to 60 it was a much better experience. Console port showing through here.

- Inventory is so ridiculously small and involves extensive micromanagement. Also foresee this one becoming quite a chore.

- Space flight is actually very "meh". Very arcady and basic. You cannot even land the frigging ship yourself! There is an invisible barrier on the ground of every planet. Once you get to low, you simply get stopped and have to "press E to land". Felt so overboard with simplicity that I laughed out loud.

+ My homeworld was aptly named "Brickage Alpha"

+ It looks nice

+ It runs well

+ It "has potential"...?

Honestly, I am hovering over the refund button at present. I either bite the bullet and plod on in hopes of it becoming better (and lose my ability to refund) or just get my money back now and say farewell. My initial time with it just made me think that this could become very repetitive and grindy, very quickly. It's an impressive technical achievement, making a random galaxy with 18 quintillion planets and all, but when there is sod all to do except "explore" (mine endlessly), what is the real point? The sad thing is, if this DID have multiplayer, it may just be decent enough for us to take a stab at.

So, yeah, not sure about it.

I think it might be worth getting the refund Jeg. They might make it a bit more playable in the future and somehow work some usable multiplayer into it but by then it will be cheaper anyway.

Yeah, it's actually a real shame. But there is simply so much wrong with it at present, it's just no fun. It is a real shame that they "sold their soul" to Sony. if they hadn't, this would probably be an early access game at a quarter of the price with promise of new stuff later down the line. It also wouldn't be such an obviously bad console port - with all the limitations there-of.

Probably for the best Meg. I doubt you will get much out of it. You can always play a bit of it first, before you do get a refund. Just remember you need < 2 hours playtime (and less than 2 weeks from owning it after it is released), so make sure you stay under that and you will be golden. I suppose that's one really good thing about Steam these days - in the absence of demos we do have a really solid refund system.

It is indeed. I would stay clear of it for the time being.

My thoughts exactly. Perhaps wait for the dust to settle and look into it later down the line. As for me, I used my refund money on the new Deus Ex instead :-)

dx is £20 on instant gaming, that will be awesome!

looked at this game last friday when you were playing it, looked interesting, but no more complete (or maybe less so) than the other space games we've played, and the £40 price tag is triple A title (remember when that meant £29.99 ? !)

would pick it up, (or have done before your review!) for £10 or so
